With a four day programme planned Thursday 27th – Sunday 30th September 2018, visitors  and locals can enjoy a number of great family-friendly eventchuis including Wild Atlantic Way Seafood Family Foraging, live outdoor cooking demonstrations, children’s cookery classes, food and art inspired workshops, and a taste of different foods from around the world.

If you like your craft beer or old fashioned cocktails, Food Fleadh hosts a Craft Brew (Beers & Cider) Festival and live cocktail-making demos, whiskey and poitin tasting, all on the Saturday during the Food Fleadh Market as well as live cooking demonstrations, a plethora of food stalls featuring foods from around the world, a lifestyle marquee with current topics for discussion, live music during the Food Fleadh market, coinciding with the Ballina Music Trail Festival in Ballina’s best live music bars over weekend of the Food Fleadh Festival.

Wild Atlantic Cultural Tours– Seafood Foraging Trip and Killala historical tour with Denis Quinn (suitable for all ages)

Meet at Killala Round Tower Thursday @ 12 Noon; Enjoy a short Historical walking Tour of Killala including a view of Killala Round Tower, (1170-1238).  Located adjacent to the Round Tower, visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, dating back to early Christian era. Depart Killala, for the North Mayo Coastline and begin your foraging adventure! Enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Killala Bay with a guided walk and forage of the coastline. Denis will take you over the vast strand to the isolated Bartra Island, walking through the crystal clear streams with tiny fish and shrimp darting for cover, keeping an eye out for sleeping seals or noisy herons among other wildlife.

Forage for cockles and mussels and samphire while learning a little about the local environment, history and archaeology from certified Failte Ireland approved local marine and countryside guide Denis Quinn. Not only does Denis have a great interest in the culture and heritage of the unspoilt Mayo North environment, he also has a BA (Hons) in Heritage Studies. Return to Killala to the Old Deanery and cook up Your catch, enjoying the final moments of the day. Lasting approximately three hours, this venture into the North Mayo coastline will leave you in awe of the beautiful scenery along the Wild Atlantic Way of North Mayo.

Friday 28th September

Connacht Distillery Discovery Tour 12.30pm / 3.30pm

The Connacht Distillery sits on the banks of the beautiful River Moy where the river widens into the Moy Estuary in Ballina, County Mayo.  Here barrel-age spirits in a rural, coastal environment unique to the West of Ireland are distilled and now Connacht Whiskey are offering Guided Tour of Irelands newest Distillery based along the banks of the River Moy. Learn about the distilling process, and local ingredients used to create the Connacht Whiskey’s award winning spirits.

The guided distillery tours bring you through the process of making whiskey and will help you understand why the distillery and its people are so passionate about single pot still Irish whiskey. The tours are set up to be small and interactive, so that you can really enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or pushed out the door to make room for a tour bus.

Clarke’s Salmon Fish Shop Smokery Tour @ 11am

With over 70 Years of experience, the Clarke family have created a wonderful range of Smoked Salmon starting with their award winning Oak Smoked Irish Wild Salmon, using the original recipe handed down from Jackie Clarke.  His sons have since expanded the range to include organics and flavoured salmon. Clarkes Salmon Fish Shop Invites you to a very special tour of its salmon smokery. Rarely does this happen and Food Fleadh Ballina are delighted to offer you the opportunity to take a peek into where the magic of organic smoked salmon is created.

Ballina Music Trail Festival

The Ballina Music Trail will feature more than 30 free gigs taking place in various venues across Ballina over the Other Voices Festival Weekend. These will be announced in the coming weeks. While scoring tickets for the Other Voices TV recordings can be like finding hen’s teeth, Ballina festival goers won’t miss a note from the Church, as the Other Voices Live Streaming rolls into town. Music fans will enjoy all the happenings in St. Michael’s Church, at multiple locations throughout Ballina. With huge screens, high definition audio visual and close proximity to a freshly poured pint, screening venues will be a massive hit during the Festival. Grab a stool in lieu of a pew, relax and enjoy. Beyond the chapel gates, the Ballina Music Trail will feature an exciting and diverse line-up of performers, musicians, bands and DJs, plying their wares across the pubs and venues of Ballina on September 28th and 29th. Guaranteed quality new sounds for all ears and 100% free to enjoy. Venues and acts performing on the Ballina Music Trail will be announced in the coming weeks.

 

Saturday 29th September

Food Fleadh Ballina  Market from 11am – 6pm

Food Fleadh’s flagship event, the Food Fleadh Market, will take place on Saturday, 29th September, once again under the fabulous canopy cover in the historic Military Barracks, so whatever the weather, a great day is in store. Food Fleadh Ballina is known for its intimate, friendly atmosphere, great food and fun events for adults and children alike. Visitors can expect the best that Mayo has to offer with locally produced artisan foods, cookery demonstrations, tasting and best of live music. Food businesses in attendance will include some of the fine dining businesses in the region such as Mount Falcon, Luskin’s Bistro and Wine Bar as well as local foragers and artisan producers. Yeast Meets West Craft Brew Fest returns for its second year to the Food Fleadh market, introducing the best of local craft beers, lagers, and ciders to Ballina. As well as a number of stalls offering a variety of food dishes and showcasing artisan produce, the event will feature a number of cookery demonstrations by local chefs, Cocktail Demos by local mixologists, featuring surprise guests for the Ready Steady Cook Off – watch this space! There will also be special cooking sessions for children. Live music will accompany the event throughout the day, to make for a real festival atmosphere, featuring the Local Voices Stage.

Ballina Music Trail Festival
Returns for a second music trail night throughout the many bars in Ballina, with the music trail playing into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Children’s River Moy Ecology Workshop With River Moy Trust @ 12 oclock – 2pm

A fun interactive workshop to explore the Biodiversity and Ecology along the River Moy and the crucial role the river plays in our food cycle. Plus, Gardening 4 Kids: Learn to grow your own food with some autumn seed planting

Last Cast Fishing Competition from 12 o’clock – 6pm

Enjoy a Last Cast on the River Moy in association with Ballina Salmon Anglers. Enjoy the last day of the fishing season with FREE Fishing in the Ballina Salmon Anglers stretch of water. Prizes on the day for best fish caught and a Fisherman’s Party in The Sean Shebeen Bar @7.00pm. Register in advance in local tackle shops.

Betty Sweeney hailing from Belmullet has her own highly sought after Boxty recipe, many have tried to replicate her Boxty.. and failed. Come in and try it, you’ll never go back..

Also, the Food Fleadh Ballina Local dish will be featured in a variety of Restaurants and Hotels all day Sunday, for Sunday lunch on the last day of the festival weekend.
